Manure stream runs from Grant Co. farm to fishing area

GRANT CO. (WKOW) -- Authorities say a stream of manure is running two miles from a large-scale dairy farm into a creek stocked with trout.

People in the area are being advised to drink bottled water for now and test any private wells wells.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports authorities say they're not sure how much waste was released from the farm's 1-million-gallon manure pit near Fennimore. The owner of Misty Morning Dairy told the state Department of Natural Resources about the spill Thursday, saying a hose coupling failed during the night and led to waste streaming out for hours.

DNR spokesman George Althoff told the newspaper crews set up berms to capture the spill, but it had already reached Castle Rock Creek.

The creek is stocked with trout each year. The DNR will now monitor the creek for any fish kills.

Neighbors have been advised to drink bottled water for now and test their wells.
