Monona Grove takes D2 State title, break two state records

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- Led by two relay wins and two individual wins from sophomore Ben McDade, Monona Grove came home victorious for the second straight year in Division 2 Boys State Swimming & Diving.

The Silver Eagles put up 296 points. Shorewood came in second with 251, while McFarland took third with a final score of 216. 

The day started from one meter up in the diving competition. Jeremu Moser from Nicolet took first place with a score of 573.90. Monona Grove's Henry Carman, who was just 2.65 points behind, took second place for the third consecutive year.

The Silver Eagles day was just getting started. In the 200 yard medley relay, Grafton took first place, but Monona Grove took second. The other two relay races would be dominated by MGHS. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the Silver Eagles claimed a state record by one hundredth of a second, besting their own state record that was set back in 2011. The 400 yard freestyle relay, the final event of the night, McDade swam the anchor, overtaking Shorewood on the final stretch. 

McDade also took home first in two individual races, the 200 yard free and the 500 yard free, setting a new state record of 4:30.12 in the 500. 

The 100 yard backstroke was easily won by Monona Grove sophomore Eric Storms. 

Baraboo newcomer, junior Noah Larson, won two events, the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle. 

Boys State Swimming & Diving wraps up Saturday with Division 1 competition.
