Grant County residents' water okay'ed after manure spill

Posted: Updated:

FENNIMORE (WKOW) -- Residents whose well water was affected by runoff from a spilled manure pit have been told it's safe to drink again.

Charlie Horn tells 27 News the Grant County Health Department told him today that he and his neighbors' water is safe and will be re-tested in two weeks to make sure.

The area near his land was contaminated this past week after waste from a million-gallon manure pit spilled from the nearby Misty Morning Dairy.  While the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources set up berms to capture the spill, contaminated water reached nearby wells and Castle Rock Creek, a local hot spot for trout fishing.  Fresh water has since been pumped into the creek.

Fisherman and guide Jim Romberg says hundreds of gallons of contaminated water are creating worry for the industry even outside of Wisconsin. He's received calls from anglers as far away as Missouri, Michigan and Illinois wondering about the impact of the spill for their own waters.

Horn also says he and friend walked the creek again today and found eight more dead trout in the area.
