Westerman making immediate impact for Badgers tennis

Posted: Updated:

The Badgers men's tennis tennis team is off to it's best start in decades. Leading the charge, a former Badgers star who returned home to take over the program prior to this season.

Danny Westerman took over the program this summer after spending nine seasons as the head coach at the University of Denver. The former All-Big Ten selection admits he wasn't sure what to expect in his first year.

"When I got here, I really had zero expectations. I just wanted these guys to get better every day. Then, come around November, I started to think, 'We're starting to come together.' It's fun to see."

Westerman's crew is off to a 6-0 start to the season. That's the best start the program has had since 1990. They've climbed up to No. 56 in the national rankings. Although, there's still a long way to climb to reach Westerman's ultimate goals for the program.

""In the short-term, we want to get in the NCAA Tournament. With that said, you probably have to be top half of the Big Ten to get to that point. I think we can do it. Then, long-term, like every other sport here, there's high expectations at Wisconsin. We want to win Big Ten titles. With tennis, if you win Big Ten, then you're up for national titles. So, there's big dreams, big hopes. We're going to do our best to get there."

The Badgers can take another step towards achieving those goals by upsetting No. 3 TCU at home on Friday night at 7 p.m.
