No. 3 Badgers power past Minnesota State in series opener

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- Third-ranked Wisconsin used a three-goal third period to put Minnesota State in the first game of their first round WCHA playoff series.

Badger forward Emily Clark put up the eventual game winner in the opening period, using heavy traffic to poke in a goal at the 18:15 minute mark.

The second period would see Wisconsin out-shoot Minnesota State 23-1, but with no reward.

Wisconsin would put the finishing touches on their play in the third period, seeing three different Badgers score goals to lock in the 4-0 victory. Defenseman Mellissa Channell scored 51 seconds into the third. Forward Sarah Nurse followed with the third goal of the game three minutes later with forward Sam Cogan knocking in the fourth just over the 14 minute-mark.

Goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens had 13 saves in the victory. With the shutout, Desbiens moves into a tie for first place in NCAA history with 17 shutouts in a single season.

The Badgers need to win two-out-of-three to move on to the next round. The two programs return to the ice tomorrow afternoon with puck-drop set at 4 p.m. If a third game is necessary, the Badgers and the Mavs will play Sunday at 2 p.m.
