400 people sign letter in support of Madison area Muslim community

MADISON (WKOW) -- It was another showing of support and solidarity for the Muslim community in Madison.

A group of leaders from many faiths came together at an Islamic center Sunday to officially deliver an open letter to Muslims in our area. 400 people signed it to defend their neighbors, after hearing what they call hateful rhetoric towards those who practice Islam.

"We wanted to let our Muslim neighbors know that those voices weren't ours, there were other people," says Rev. Brad Brookins, with Mt. Vernon United Church of Christ. "We were standing with them, supporting them against the hateful rhetoric that was coming out."

Muslim leaders say they were overwhelmed with the outpouring of support.

"Not only as leaders of your institutions, churches, but you went one step beyond that. You actually started mobilizing your community," Masood Akhtar, a Muslim community leader, told those who gathered Sunday.

These religious leaders say they plan to work together to organize more community events and forums to come together to talk about cultural differences in our neighborhoods.
