UPDATE (WKOW)-- Just after 1:00 p.m. the call went out saying the Bare Necessities Market in the Village of La Valle was on fire. Firefighters rushed over from the fire station just three doors down, but they knew immediately the fire would require some additional help.

"With the first call five or six fire departments came to assist," La Valle Fire Department Information Officer Tommy Lee Bychinski says.

Minutes later a second call went out requesting water trucks. Departments responded from as far away as Dane and Juneau Counties. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby businesses, but officials say they weren't able to save the grocery store.

"A lot of the people from La Valle will miss it dearly," Bychinski says. "I mean, they will really miss it, because now you're going to have to go basically to Reedsburg or up to Hillsboro."

Driving into La Valle, the population sign shows just 367 people call it home. Mark Johnson is one of them and first moved into the community 43 years ago.

"We lived two blocks from this store my whole childhood," Johnson explains. "It's been a landmark in La Valle for years."

Johnson remembers going to the grocery store for ice cream back when it was owned by a different local family. He says now as a father it was great to be able to bring his kids into the same store he often frequented as a child.

"We would go in for candy and baseball cards," Johnson says. "It's just another loss on Main Street. When you drive into town you're used to seeing that business and it's no longer there."

Suzy Jacobson also remembers stopping by the grocery store as a child. She says her mother used to work there part time. She couldn't believe her eyes when she pulled onto Main Street Tuesday afternoon and saw flames pouring out of the building.

"I was in shock. I could not believe what I was seeing," Jacobson says. "With the building being gone it's going to put a lot of hardship on a lot of us without a grocery store."

Residents say the nearest grocery store is in Reedsburg nearly seven miles away. For some residents it's just a short drive away, but residents say many in the community don't drive and would walk to Bare Necessities for groceries.

Residents say it's true that a convenience store is just down the road, but the selection is limited.

"It's going to be greatly missed, that's for sure," Jacobson explains.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire is still unknown. The Sauk County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation. Officials say ten different fire departments responded to the call.

LA VALLE (WKOW) -- Sauk County dispatchers tell 27 News multiple fire departments are at the scene of a fire at Bare Necessities Marketplace, a grocery store in the Town of La Valle, northwest of Reedsburg.

The initial report, according to Sauk County dispatch, was for smoke coming out of the roof of the building, then a responding deputy reported seeing flames coming from the back of the building.

In addition to three fire departments and sheriff's deputies, Baraboo ambulance was also at the scene.
