Wilcox settling in as Badgers defensive coordinator

MADISON (WKOW) -

This spring has been a feeling out period for new Badgers defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and his players. Wilcox is gradually introducing his schemes and new language to the playbook.

"The scheme is important, and we're going to keep doing install and all of those things so we have our menu that we need for the fall, but really it's the techniques, it's the fundamentals of the game and those things that we're focusing on in spring football. We're focusing on ourselves."

The 39-year old has been focusing on a hands-on approach in practice. Veterans such as cornerback Sojourn Shelton have noticed a different energy level from Wilcox than what they were used to under former defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.

"Coach Wilcox brings his own energy to the defense," said Shelton. "It's kind of something we didn't have the last three years, just as far as him being more involved, him being somebody pointing things out. I think Coach Wilcox is a special piece."

The Badgers plan on paying a hefty price for that special piece. The details of Wilcox's contract were released to various media outlets Thursday. He is set to earn $1.45 million over the next two years.
