Dunn earns dream promotion to Badgers roster

Posted: Updated:

Growing up in the shadows of Camp Randall Stadium, Bobby Dunn has long dreamed of wearing a red 'W' on the side of his helmet.

"I mean I grew up in a house four blocks from here. I could walk to the games every Saturday. It's been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember."

The former Madison Edgewood quarterback took his first steps towards making that dream a reality when he reached out to Paul Chryst shortly after the coach's return to the Badgers. Eventually, Dunn was offered an internship in the football offices. That is where the aspiring coach heard about open tryouts this offseason. Despite having not played in a game since 2013, Dunn began training and participated in the open tryout where he earned a spot on the roster.

"It's almost surreal at this point," the sophomore says. "Just when it all came together, it's really exciting. I'm just trying to make the most of it every day."

With just two other healthy quarterbacks on the roster, Dunn has had his share of reps in spring practice. The 5'9" signal caller has had to knock some rust off and is keeping his expectations realistic.

"When you're getting an opportunity like I'm getting, you have to just compete every day, but the same time, know your role. So, whether it's signaling in plays, being the guy who does inside run, just finding my role, which I'm still trying to figure out."

Dunn is hoping to compete for the third-string job in the fall. As he's learned throughout this experience, all you need is a foot in the door and anything is possible.
