Ramczyk takes road less traveled to starting spot

MADISON (WKOW) -- Every time Ryan Ramczyk puts on the Badger helmet, it's a reminder his highest hope has been realized.
"Growing up in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, central Wisconsin it's been a huge dream of mine. Growing up watching football on Saturdays and Sundays, seeing the Badgers play, it's always been a dream of mine," Ramczyk said.
This spring, Ramczyk is lining up with Wisconsin's starting offensive line at left tackle. It's his first year of eligibility with the Badgers, but Ramczyk has been on the radar of coach Paul Chyrst for quite some time.
"We knew about Ryan when he was coming out of high school. That year when we went to Pitt we offered him and he didn't want to go out east," Chryst said.
Out of Stevens Point High School in 2012, Ramczyk signed to play at Winona State, after not getting recruited by the Badgers. Ramczyk never enrolled at Winona though, leaving to take classes at Mid-State Technical College, where he thought his football career was over.
"I was probably going to go into welding or something. Some hands-on career," Ramczyk said.
But life off the field didn't last long, as an old coach convinced him to come to play football at UW-Stevens Point in 2013.
"I took that opportunity, Just fell in love with the game again," Ramczyk said.
Ramczyk played two years for the Pointers and was named first-team all-conference. An honorable accomplishment, but Ramczyk wanted to reach for more.
"I wanted to pursue the highest level of football I could, so I reached out to these coaches here," Ramczyk said.
The coach he contacted was the newly hired Paul Chyrst, who knew well of Ramczyk's abilities, so Chryst invited him to transfer.
"We feel fortunate he wanted to come here and it worked out and love having him on this team," Chryst said.
It was far from the conventional path from Stevens Point to Madison, but ultimately it's the route that has helped Ramczyk reach his dream.
"It was an incredible opportunity I was given to have the chance to come here. Obviously very thankful for the coaching staff here for looking at me and giving me a chance to come here and play," Ramczyk said.
