Badgers swimmer qualifies for Olympics

MADISON (WKOW) -

Matt Hutchins came to the United States with a dream. Someday, he wanted to represented his native New Zealand in the Olympics. That dream has come true for the Badgers junior.

"That's probably one of the main reasons I came over to the States was to put myself to hopefully get to this position. It's kind of been on the radar, but probably the last 12 months it's been this is possibly something I could actually achieve."

Hutchins qualified for the Olympics by meeting the qualification standard in the 400-meter freestyle at the Canadian Olympic Trials. Hutchins missed the New Zealand Olympic qualifying competition due to the NCAA championships. So, he jumped in the pool with the top Canadian swimmers and punched his ticket to Rio di Janeiro later in the year.

"My Facebook page got really busy. I had notification after notification. My family, it was really like all of the aunties and uncles, day after day after day, it was like Facebook after Facebook after Facebook. So, that was kind of cool. I really built up in my mind what the moment would feel like. I thought I would celebrate a lot more, but I was kind of more just like yeah, but now kind of talking to people, making plans, if you're going to be in Rio getting all this information about the games and stuff. It's really starting to hit me a little bit more the last few days "

Hutchins is the 11th Badgers swimmer to qualify for the Olympics and first since 2004.

"At this stage, the medals are definitely out of the expectation. If something wild happens, then it happens. That would be awesome, but I just really want to go out and perform my best."
