Speaker Vos wants to review request for voter ID education funding

MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said Wednesday he would like to review the Government Accountability Board's(GAB) request for funding to be spent on educating state voters about voter ID requirements.

The GAB voted Tuesday to ask the legislature's finance committee for $250,000 to revive its efforts to educate people about photo identification requirements at the polls ahead of the fall election season.

Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills, and Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, serve as the finance committee's co-chairs. A spokesman for Darling said she, like Vos, wants to see the details of the request.

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Democratic state lawmaker and the League of Women Voters(LWV) are urging Wisconsin's Government Accountability Board(GAB), which governs elections, to ask for more money to education people about photo identification requirements at the polls.

Rep. Chris Taylor, of Madison, told the board Tuesday morning it should request supplemental funding from the Wisconsin Legislature's budget committee to fund a public education campaign. The committee has about $267,000 available in supplemental funding for state agencies.

Taylor and LWV Executive Director Andrea Kaminski told the board the state's voter ID law is confusing.

The board didn't take any immediate action. Board member John Franke said no matter how much the board spends some voters won't get the message.

The general election is set for November 8.
