UPDATE: Man arrested at interstate shooting convicted felon

Posted: Updated:

DANE COUNTY (WKOW) -- Authorities say one of the men arrested after an Illinois woman was shot and critically wounded on I-90/94 is a convicted felon.

Authorities say a 20-year old homicide suspect in a West Allis killing Sunday was shot and wounded by Columbia County Sheriff's deputies on the highway.  Investigators say the man is also the suspect in the apparent random shooting of the 44-year old Buffalo Grove woman a short time before the suspect himself was shot.

Dane County Sheriff's spokesperson Elise Schaffer says the suspect's 34-year old and 30-year old brothers were arrested at time of the officer-involved shooting.

Schaffer says one of the brothers was booked into the Dane County jail on the tentative charge of a felon in possession of a gun.  Schaffer says the homicide suspect had a handgun, and a long gun was found in the Chevy Blazer the men traveled in on the interstate.

Schaffer says the other brother was booked into the jail on the tentative charge of expelling bodily fluids on a law enforcement officer.

Schaffer declined to identify the two brothers being held in the jail, citing the West Allis Police Department's ongoing homicide investigation.

Schaffer also declined to identify the 20-year old homicide suspect, who remains hospitalized, with his condition unspecified.

Sheriff David Mahoney says the 44-year old interstate shooting victim is in very, critical condition.

DEFOREST (WKOW) --- Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney says the woman shot in a drive-by shooting on I-90/94 was visiting the Wisconsin Dells area with her husband and two children when she was shot.  Three rounds were fired into their vehicle.

The 44-year old woman from Illinois was shot in the neck is in "very critical condition," according to Sheriff Mahoney.

Mahoney says this seems to be a random act and is asking for any witnesses to the shooting Sunday afternoon, to call officials at 608-284-6900.

Multiple agencies ended up pursuing the suspect for minutes before they were able to deploy strips and stop the suspect.

The Columbia County Sheriff says two of his deputies shot the suspect and are now on administrative leave pending the investigation.  Sheriff Mahoney added, the suspect was armed and displaying his handgun when he was shot.

Officials say the 20-year-old suspect from West Allis is in custody and still being treated at the hospital.

Sheriff officials say that the suspect's two brothers, ages 30 and 34, were also in the vehicle, and were arrested and booked into the Dane County jail.  Officials say the three had traveled to Wisconsin Dells after the suspect shot and killed a 42-year-old man in West Allis Sunday morning.

Authorities say the shooting suspect remains hospitalized, but no condition update has been provided.  Neither the suspect, nor his brothers have been identified.

The victim is from Buffalo Grove.  Friends say she has worked as a dental hygienist.

Authorities say another woman's rented sedan was hit by gunfire on the interstate, but the Florida woman was unhurt.

"It went through the hood,"  Gjuanna Hewitt tells 27 News of one bullet.  "He had the gun and was shooting in the air.  Very, very scary."

DANE COUNTY (WKOW) -- A Dane County Sheriff's spokesperson says the person shot and critically wounded on I-90/94 near Lake Delton Sunday is a woman from Illinois.

Eyewitnesses say gun fire came from a car on the interstate, with vehicles being hit, in addition to the woman.

The woman formerly lived in New Jersey.  A family spokesperson in New Jersey tells 27 News she is making no comment at this time.

Authorities say the suspected shooter allegedly shot and killed 42-year old Gabriel Sanchez in West Allis hours before the highway incident Sunday.  Authorities also say the suspect made threats at or near a West Allis church.

Authorities say the suspected shooter is a 20-year old man who had two other persons in his SUV, ages thirty and thirty-four.  An eyewitness tells 27 News cans of beer were being tossed from the SUV onto the highway.

Authorities say the 20-year old man was shot and wounded by Columbia County Sheriff's deputies on the interstate in Dane County near DeForest, after road spikes were deployed, the vehicle stopped, and the man emerged with a gun.
