Former Wisconsin women's hockey defenseman Courtney Burke has signed her first professional contract. Burked inked a deal with the New York Riveters of the National Women's Hockey League.

Burke ended her Badgers career with 108 points. She ranks third in school history in scoring among UW defenseman. Burke earned second-team All-American honors as a senior in 2016. She led the WCHA with 35 defenseman points.

The Albany, New York native was originally drafted by the Buffalo Beauts of the NWHL in the first round of the 2015 Draft. However, league rules allowed her to sign with any team as a free agent. The Riveters will forfeit $5,000 from their salary cap to the Beauts for Burke's rights. She will join former Badgers Madison Packer and Brooke Ammerman on New York's roster.
