Stave hoping to stick with Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (WKOW) -

Joel Stave's past is rooted in the state of Wisconsin, but his future now lies in Minnesota. The former Badgers quarterback has signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Vikings. He put on his purple helmet for the first time Friday at the opening of rookie minicamp.

"Coming from Wisconsin, I know people there are very strong Packers fans, but I actually always grew up a Vikings fans. That didn't factor in to my decision at all, but it's just kind of an added bonus for me."

Stave's father grew up in North Dakota rooting on the Vikings. So, Stave and his brother followed suit. Now, he's hoping to beat the odds with the Vikings as a rookie free agent.

"Obviously you'd like to get drafted, but that's not my call. You just have to make the best of the situation. I think it's a good fit for me. I think I'll get an opportunity to compete and that's really all you can ask for."

Stave says several other teams called with offers following the draft including the Bengals, Chargers and Cardinals. However, he felt like Minnesota offered him the best chance to make a final roster.

"I like the way they coach here. I know they keep three quarterbacks on the roster. So, it gives you a good opportunity to compete to earn a spot."

The Vikings are currently carrying four quarterbacks on the roster. Teddy Bridgewater is the established starter. That leaves Stave competing with veteran Shaun Hill and former undrafted rookie Taylor Heinicke for one of the possible two backup positions.
