MADISON (WKOW) -- Most cheesemakers would like to take home the grand prize award for the World Championship Cheese Contest. In this contest, the judges are analyzing the overall cheese and also providing feedback to the cheesemakers.
John Umhoefer, the executive director of Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association, says cheesemakers are "getting scrutinized for their bitterness, and their acidity, and about 56 different defects." He adds he thinks cheesemakers enter the contest for the constructive criticism.
This year, Wisconsin won more awards than any other state in the country. Wisconsin won 127 total awards, including the coveted World Champion cheese.
The World Championship Cheese Contest is the largest technical cheese, butter, and yogurt competition in the world. Nearly 3,000 cheese entries from 23 countries and 31 states were evaluated during this year's competition.
