UW-Whitewater baseball in D3 tournament for 9th consecutive year

WHITEWATER -- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team will make its ninth consecutive appearance and 20th overall in the NCAA Division III Tournament starting this Wednesday at the Sauget, Illinois Regional.

UW-Whitewater will be the regional's top seed and take on sixth-seeded Westminster (Mo.) Wednesday to open the tournament. Game time has yet to bedetermined.

The Warhawks (29-14 overall) picked up one of 16 at-large bids into the 56-team field. The team earned a Pool “C” berth.

Webster (Mo.) University will serve as regional host. Other regional teams include No. 2 seed Wartburg (Iowa), No. 3 Augustana (Ill.), No. 4 Washington-St. Louis and No. 5 Rose-Hulman (Ind.).

UW-Whitewater posted its second straight runner-up finish at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship over the weekend, falling to No. 4 UW-La Crosse Sunday in the tournament title game.

The Warhawks have now qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 12 of the last 14 seasons. The team won national championships in 2005 and 2014 and reached the championship round five times during that span.

Westminster (28-13) is the automatic qualifier from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Blue Jays won their fourth SLIAC Tournament championship over the weekend and will make their third-ever appearance in the national tournament.
