MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Veterans Museum opens a new exhibit next week where people can look nearly 100 years in the past.
The "Art of Persuasion: Mobilizing The Masses in World War I" opens Friday, May 27 at the museum and runs through March of 2017. Museum-goers will have the chance to examine the use of war propaganda with 34 iconic posters commissioned by the Committee on Public Information that were posted all across Wisconsin and the United States that encouraged the war effort.
Among the posters were those that called for some to enlist. Others asked for civilians to buy war bonds. “This exhibit portrays a very significant time in U.S. history,” said Michael Telzrow, Wisconsin Veterans Museum Director. “Visitors will get to see how the Federal government employed themes of duty, patriotism and fear to turn public opinion away from isolationism, and ultimately mobilize the country to help turn the tide in favor of the Allied forces.”
