UW-Whitewater prepares for NCAA Division III World Series

Posted: Updated:
WHITEWATER (WKOW) -

The UW-Whitewater baseball team is in familiar territory. The Warhawks are preparing for another trip to Appleton for the Division III World Series. They'll face La Roche (PA) on Friday at 7:45 p.m. CT.

UW-Whitewater has become a national powerhouse. However, a trip to the national finals was not guaranteed this year. After starting the season 11-0, the Warhawks scuffled in the middle of the season.

"We had a stretch of about 12-14 games where we played very poorly," says head coach John Vodenlich. "We didn't hit well. We didn't field well. We didn't pitch it. It made us question who we are as a team and what we could accomplish. We got over that and things started to come together now. So, we're very pleased."

The Warhawks appear to playing well at just the right time. They've pitched well much of the year. Now, they're also hitting it. The team belted 12 home runs in six games at the regional tournament. So, they believe they'll be a dangerous underdog at the World Series.

"We're young, but we're playing good baseball at a good time," says pitcher Ankur Shah. "I think we're going to show this weekend."
