BARABOO (WKOW) -- Sauk County officials tell 27 News accused murderer and interstate shooter Zachary Hays is now in the county's jail, and the state's online court records system lists Hays as having an initial court appearance scheduled for June 9.

The Sauk County Sheriff's Office says Hays was released from UW Hospital in Madison on Wednesday. He had been hospitalized since being shot by deputies on Interstate 39/90 in Dane County on May 1.

Charges against Hays in Sauk County include 1st-Degree Intentional Homicide and three counts of 1st-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety. He faces life in prison if he's convicted.

A criminal complaint filed in the case says Hays shot and killed 44-year-old Tracy Czaczkowski, of Buffalo Grove, IL, as she traveled with her husband and two children. They were in their car, driving home on the interstate after a trip to the Dells.  The complaint states Zachary Hays' 30-year-old brother, Jeremy, who was in the vehicle with Zachary and another brother, told detectives Zachary had smoked marijuana a few days earlier and had been paranoid ever since.

The complaint stated Jeremy said his brother was paranoid about cars with tinted windows, "freaking out about them."

Authorities say hours before the interstate shooting, Zachary Hays shot and killed a 42-year old man in West Allis.

Hays shot the Czaczkowski car and at least one other on the interstate.

Authorities chased the brothers' vehicle into Dane County. They say Hays emerged from the SUV with a gun and ignored police commands before he was shot.

At a previous hearing on May 17, Hays and his attorney were only present via phone from the hospital. His bail was set at $500,000. During that hearing we learned Hays was shot at least twice by deputies.
