MADISON (WKOW) -- The family of the 18-year-old woman who was arrested at East Towne Mall arrived in Madison on Wednesday. Genele Laird's mother, father and sister drove in from Champaign, Illinois.

Deirdre Thompson, Laird's sister, spoke to 27 News saying the family is frustrated.

"I don't even know if she knows that we're here. It's not a good feeling to have my sister feet away from me after traveling hundreds of miles and just not be able to see her," Thompson said.

She added her parents are too taken back by the video, showing Madison police tasing Laird as they tried arresting her, to speak publicly.

"We're stressed out, we're annoyed, we are frustrated, we are confused," Thompson explained.

Laird's sister says she tried contacting Madison police but said she got nowhere. Now she's hoping the district attorney won't press charges against Laird.

"Now it's viral," Thompson said. "Everyone has an opinion on it. She's known in Madison. This is going to be an ongoing punishment for her with or without these charges against her."

Thompson, who says she worked as a Junior police explorer for an Illinois police department, told 27 News she has always been on law enforcement's side. She added that her family isn't asking for the officers who arrested Laird to be charged.

"I understand police are people, when they get into situations, you know. But I don't think it was that hard to have the common sense to know that that's not the procedure to go through," Thompson explained.

She says she wants a federal investigation done on the Madison Police Department. Laird is due to make her initial court appearance early Thursday afternoon, according to her family.
