Card chasing Olympic dream at trials

Posted: Updated:

Kelsey Card re-wrote the record book in her Badgers career. The seven-time first-team All-American is now striving to add a new title to her resume...Olympian.

"That's one thing that kind of transcends time and just culture and communities because you say that word and everybody knows what it means and how important it is and how big of a deal. Especially for Team USA, they say it's the hardest team to make. I think that's a pretty fair statement. So, for anyone who can call themselves that, it lasts for a lifetime. They can't take that away from you. It's really cool."

Card's quest to earn that title will continue at the end of the week in Eugene, Oregon at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials. She'll compete in the discus on Friday and Saturday. Card will then return to compete in the shot put on July 7th. Based on the qualifications numbers, Card's best hope of punching a ticket to Rio de Janeiro appears to be the discus.

"Numbers are important to get into the meet. Then, once you're at the meet, anything can happen," says Card. "I've seen that happen with myself and then just other people. So, it's really going to come down to who decides to show up and throw far on a day. Anything is possible, and, hopefully, all the training and work and stuff that we've put in, pays off at the right moment."
