Wisconsin's Ziemek chasing Olympic bid in decathlon

Posted: Updated:

When Zach Ziemek first arrived on Wisconsin's campus, his only goal was to compete at the collegiate level.

"My first year with Coach (Nate) Davis was a little rough just trying to get some new technical aspects in. After I started to get some stuff in, it started to really mesh together that I really started to think that , 'Wow. I can maybe make a world team, maybe make an Olympic team.'"

Ziemek burst on to the world scene a year ago by finishing third in the decathlon at the USA Outdoor Championship. That earned him a trip to the world championship and confidence heading into the Olympic year.

"It definitely gave me some confidence going against some of the top guys in the world, and I'll be going against some of the top guys again in the world at the trials. So, it just lets me know that I can compete with them."

Ziemek has already reached the Olympic qualifying standard. So, his goal for this weekend at Eugene, Oregon is straightforward...finish in the top three to earn a trip to Rio de Janeiro.

"I'm going to go in there and concentrate on myself. First or third, it doesn't matter which place I take, it's just taking a top three spot."

The decathlon begins on Saturday morning in Eugene, Oregon and ends Sunday.
