Alice in Dairyland: Wisconsin's ag industry has changed over years

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The state's new Alice in Dairyland is on a mission to teach Wisconsinites about how agriculture impacts our lives every day.

It's not just the food we eat, but in other products we buy, says the 69th Alice in Dairyland, Ann O'Leary. She says there are many careers to choose from and not all mean you work on the farm.

O'Leary says farmers themselves do need to be tech savvy these days. While some are using fit bits to track their cows' activity, others are watering their crops with help from smartphones.

The farming industry has expanded to include professionals other than farmers as well. "Wisconsin's agriculture industry offers 400 different career options both on and off the farm. Today, 1 in 9 jobs in the state are tied to agriculture." From teaching to finance to local bankers who are offering ag loans.
