DEERFIELD (WKOW) -- Two unique events, but done in conjunction with each other, will raise money for Special Olympics of Wisconsin and honor the lives of two special people.
Lt. Mark Horstmann with the Verona Police Department is one of the organizers of the annual Andrea Rose Garcia Memorial Pistol Shoot and annual Sergeant Tom Baitinger Memorial Motorcycle Ride that will happen Sunday, July 17 in Deerfield. He says Garcia was a Special Olympics volunteer who helped out for years with the Madison Polar Plunge. She was killed in a car accident and the Pistol Shoot was dedicated in her honor. Sgt. Baitinger was a former member of the Dane County Sheriff's Office and did the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Wisconsin. He was killed in the line of duty in 2011 while he was working for a police agency in Florida. The motorcycle ride was created to honor Sgt. Baitinger, Lt. Horstmann says.
The Pistol Shoot starts at 10:00 a.m. at the Deerfield Pistol and Archery Center (43 North Main Street). Registration is $25 and that includes targets and lunch. Ammo is available to buy and handguns are available to rent. Awards will be given to the top Special Olympics Wisconsin athlete shooters as well as the top female and male shooters.
Registration for the motorcycle ride will start at 10:30 a.m. There will be a short program at 12:30 followed by the ride at 1:00 p.m. Cost for each motorcycle operator is $25 and each passenger is $15. That includes lunch. The ride starts and ends at the Deerfield Firemen's Park (Park Road - Business Area).
All day from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. there will be food, live music, games for kids, a silent auction and raffles at Firemen's Park. All events are open to the public. Local band Pacific Coast Highway will be performing from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to Special Olympics Wisconsin.
