Badgers' Card prepares for trip to Olympics

At first glance, it would appear not much has changed in Kelsey Card's life recently. She is back in Madison training at the throws complex on Wisconsin's campus, much as she has for the last several years. However, a closer look at her shirt reveals the new reality of her life. That 'USA' printed on the front is a reminder that the former Badgers star can now call herself an Olympian.

"I still feel like I can't 100% call myself that until I've actually participated in the Games, but it's really cool. It's exciting. It's every serious athlete's dream. To be living the dream, it's amazing."

Card qualified for the Olympics by placing third in the discus at the Olympic Trials. She is the first Wisconsin female field athlete to earn an Olympic nod.

"To get to represent Team USA at the Olympics is really cool. I'm stoked to, obviously, participate and compete and also to be around such extremely incredible athletes. Just to walk around and see all of these athlete celebrities, it will be mind-blowing."

Card plans to stay in Rio for the entirety of the Games, including the opening and closing ceremonies. She is hoping to soak in the life-changing experience. As for her expectations on the field, she is trying to take a realistic approach.

"When I was home, people were like, 'I can't wait to see you on the medal stand'. It's like I like to dream big, but it's kind of far out there. I think right now my goal is to make finals and, for me, to try to get a personal best throw. That would be great just to improve on that mark."
