Life After Coaching: Bobbie Kelsey opens up on firing, new career

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- It's been nearly five months since Bobbie Kelsey was let go as the head coach of the Badger Women's Basketball program.

"The players, being in the gym. Physically in the gym so I miss that part the most," Kelsey says while reminiscing on her time at UW.

In her 5 years with Wisconsin, the victories were hard to come by as the Badgers went 19-65 in Big Ten play and 47-100 overall.

"Wow we hadn't won enough you know, and that's the bottom line, "Kelsey said, "Personally, everybody got along. We liked each other. Barry's great. Terry Gawlik is awesome. But professionally you have to win."

In the weeks following her termination, Kelsey kept her doors open to new coaching opportunities, but Michael Johnson, the President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County offered her a spot to continue giving back to her community.

"Nothing panned out for the basketball and I wasn't actively pursing anything really to be honest and so I said, well why not? It's good folks here. I've enjoyed my time here. I'm glad I didn't have to rush out of town. I'm glad the opportunity came for the Boys and Girls Club."

Operating on a interim basis, Kelsey is now the Vice President of Corporate and Wellness Programs, finding sponsorships and organizing fundraisers. But her passion will always be coaching.

"Coach Bobbie will be back. I just love it. I love basketball. I love the game."

As for the state of the new Badger squad, she has nothing but love.

"I want them to do well and I've always wanted that but I'll be watching from afar."
