Alleged interstate shooter faces new charges

Posted: Updated:

PORTAGE (WKOW) -- The West Allis man charged in the drive-by shooting death of an Illinois traveler in Sauk County was charged with new criminal counts in Columbia County Friday in connection with the same, violent interstate trip.

Prosecutors filed two counts of attempted first degree intentional homicide, three counts of reckless endangerment and one count of fleeing an officer against 20-year old Zachary Hays.

A criminal complaint says Hays shot at a car, fired his gun around a third car and tried to ram a state trooper as police chased him.

Authorities say Hays fatally shot a West Allis neighbor May 1, and then killed an Illinois woman on Interstate 90-94, as Hays and his two brothers traveled through several counties, including Sauk and Columbia.

According to court documents, one of Hays' brothers told detectives Zachary Hays appeared paranoid after smoking marijuana days before and was targeting cars with tinted windows.
