Madison West building off of first-year head coach Brad Murphy

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- Brad Murphy has never been a head coach, but in 12 years of coaching in the area, he's ready for the challenge.

The Middleton native was taken under the wing of former Monona Grove head coach Mike Stassi in 2004. Ten years later, Murphy helped lead the Silver Eagles to a WIAA Division 3 state title in 2012, compiling a 55-5 record as an offensive coordinator, secondary, and receivers coach.

Two years ago, Murphy would depart MG to become Madison West's offensive coordinator before heading to Madison Memorial last season to become the Spartans defensive coordinator.

Murphy replaces J.C Dawkins, a former University of Wisconsin wide receiver who went 6-13 in two seasons with the Regents. Dawkins told WKOW that he was fired after finishing 1-8 last fall.

Murphy takes over a team with some strong ties to as he coached several of the upperclassmen just two years prior.

"I love it. I can't get enough of it here, " Murphy said before their second day of practice, "The kids are awesome. They definitely wanted me back and that made it that much easier for me to come back. And just looking forward to the season, can't wait to get this thing rolling."

Senior linebacker Sydney Thomas speaks highly of his new head coach.

"Coach Murphy, he's a great guy. He's always one of the coaches that he's gonna show you tough love . He's gonna get on ya but at the end of the day he loves you so we know that."

The Regents open up the 2016 season with Beloit Memorial on August 19.
