Voltz shifts down the line for the Badgers

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -

Dan Voltz has waited the better part of a year for this moment. It was his chance to return to the practice field this week for the first time since suffering a torn ACL in October.

"It feels like it's been years since I played. I missed the last half of last season and all of spring ball. It's hard to sit on the sidelines when you love the game so much."

Still, the Badgers' fifth-year offensive lineman didn't exactly feel at home. That's because his home along the line has changed. After starting for three years at center, Voltz is shifting over to guard. Michael Deiter did so well filling in for Voltz last season that Voltz offered to make the position switch. Now, he'll be able to provide some crucial flexibility along the interior of the line.

"I'm obviously going to be taking center reps too because you never know how things are going to shake out during the season with injuries. It's something you have to prepare for unfortunately.I feel confident at center. I've played a lot of games at center."

The Badgers still have the better part of a month to hammer out the exact roles along the line. The season opener is Sept. 3 at Lambeau Field against LSU.
