Wheelwright hoping to lead Badgers receivers

Posted: Updated:

For the past couple seasons, the Badgers have had an unquestioned leader at the receiver position. However, Alex Erickson and his 978 receiving yards have moved on to the NFL. That leaves Robert Wheelwright as the top returner. The senior caught 32 passes for 416 yards last year. He'll need to significantly improve those numbers as he assumes a leadership role with this year's group of pass-catchers.

"Being an older guy, I have those type of days where you watch and have a better understanding of the plays and watching other guys mistakes and rights and wrongs and learning from that and taking it to my own game. Me being more dependable on myself by going out there and making plays and being accountable when the coaches need me."

Wheelwright posted four touchdown catches in just nine games of action last year. The Badgers' coaching staff wants to make sure he stays healthy this season. So, he was held out of some portions of practice on Wednesday as a precaution.
