UPDATE (WKOW) -- Fitchburg authorities say a 57-year-old man has significant injuries after a house explosion on Cheryl Road near Fish Hatchery Road.

They say he was conscious when he was taken to the hospital early Thursday evening.

First responders were called to the house explosion at 5573 Cheryl Drive in Fitchburg just before 7:00 p.m. Fire Chief Joe Pulvermacher says he's never seen something like this in his time leading the Fitchburg Fire Department. "This is a highly significant explosion. There's not a lot that have had an experience like this and none in the city of Fitchburg that I am aware of," says Pulvermacher.

Fitchburg authorities say three houses in the neighborhood have major structural damage and 23 others have minor to moderate damage. Chief Pulvermacher says four homes did not have gas or electricity after the blast.

Debris from the explosion was spread across the intersection of Cheryl Drive and Fish Hatchery Road. Pulvermacher estimated the debris spread out about a half-mile from the scene. Authorities say they are trying to clear the debris and hope to have Fish Hatchery Road fully reopened by the Friday morning rush hour.

Fitchburg police say a full investigation is underway with help from the state's Division of Criminal Investigation, the State Fire Marshal and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

First responders from Fitchburg, Verona, Town of Madison and City of Madison came to help.

The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army both responded on scene to assist residents with housing or other needs.

People all across the Madison area tell 27 News they heard the boom from the explosion Thursday night. Joanna Bisgrove lives a few blocks away from Cheryl Drive on Richardson Street. She says she was talking with some colleagues after a meeting and they heard the boom. "My husband called immediately. He said our daughters were sitting near the door by our porch. The oldest one felt a rush of air come into the house. My husband heard it, he said it was huge. They saw debris papers flying everywhere," she says.

Many people posted on the 27 News Facebook page that they heard the explosion, even as far away as the Edgerton area.
