MADISON, Wis. (Per UW Athletics) – The 2016-17 Big Ten Conference schedule for women’s basketball was released on Monday by the conference office. The Wisconsin women’s basketball team will play 16 Big Ten games this season, hosting seven teams that competed in postseason play in 2016.

"We are excited for our Big Ten schedule as we host NCAA tournament teams Ohio State, Michigan State, Indiana and Purdue as well as WNIT participants Michigan, Nebraska and Rutgers,” first-year head coach Jonathan Tsipis said. “Leading the next chapter of Wisconsin women's basketball, I am enthusiastic that we will have the best fans and develop a strong home-court advantage in the Kohl Center. Our team will be an unselfish team that prides itself on great defense and a fast-paced transition attack on offense. We look forward to being a part of a great Big Ten women's basketball season."

Wisconsin opens the Big Ten season on New Year’s Day with a game against Michigan. The Wolverines were 21-14 last season, advancing to the semifinals of the WNIT.

Following road games at WNIT participants Rutgers (19-15 in 2015-16) and Minnesota (20-12), Wisconsin returns home to host Purdue, which made the NCAA tournament last season, on Jan. 11. The Boilermakers lost in the opening round to Oklahoma and finished the year 20-12.

The Badgers travel to Penn State (12-19) and Ohio State (26-8) in mid-January before two straight home games against NCAA challengers Michigan State and Indiana. The Spartans, who come to the Kohl Center on Jan. 25, fell in the second round of the tournament to Mississippi State and finished at 25-9. Indiana, which is led by 2016 Big Ten Coach of the Year Teri Moren, comes to Madison on Jan. 29 after a 21-12 season and second-round NCAA tournament showing.

Wisconsin opens February with a trip to Northwestern (18-17) for the only meeting between the two teams.

A tough home schedule awaits the Badgers in February as they welcome Ohio State (26-8) on Feb. 4 and Nebraska (18-13) on Feb. 9. The Buckeyes finished second in the Big Ten last season and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Huskers lost in the first round of the WNIT and welcome in new head coach Amy Williams.

Road trips to Michigan and reigning regular-season Big Ten champion Maryland (31-4) proceed UW’s final two home games.

The Badgers welcome WNIT second-round participant Rutgers (19-15) on Feb. 18 before their final home game against Illinois (9-20) on Feb. 22. The regular season wraps up at WNIT participant Iowa (19-14).

The Big Ten Tournament returns to Indianapolis and will be held at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on March 1-5.
