Wisconsin Defense Shines in Season Opening Win

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -

One good problem for the Badgers after Saturday's 16-14 win over No.5 LSU is it's tough to point point all of the players that stepped up in the win, especially on the defense side of the ball.

Most of the attention for the Wisconsin coaching staff was stopping LSU running back Leonard Fournette. He finished with 138 yards but never found the end zone against the Badger defense.

"The one thing i remember telling Justin and Jimmy, the two new coaches. the one thing you will like about this group of guys is they will be ready to play, and I thought the guys were ready." Said head coach Paul Chryst.

Wisconsin's defense had a set back on their first possession.Inside linebacker Chris Orr left with a knee injury. He was replaced by sophomore Ryan Connelly who combined with Vince Biegel, T.J. Watt and Jack Cichey for 26 tackles in the game.

"Ryan made plays all over the field. he made tackles, great pass coverage, pass blocks." Said Biegel after the game. "I think that gives credit to our coaching staff to prepare our starters but also prepare that second man in, because when the time calls they are ready to go."

Wisconsin's secondary also came up big,  intercepting two Brandon Harris passes including one by D 'Cota Dixon in the fourth quarter with a two point Badger lead to seal the win.

"We take great pride especially in those turnovers" Said Dixon. "I was very proud in DT [Derrick Tindal], I was very proud of our corners for playing such a good ball game."

Senior CB Sojourn Shelton said,"I think it's a confidence booster. playing in that game felt like a championship game. I've never playing in a playoff game of that atmosphere but playing in a bowl game, a championship game. it had that feel."

Wisconsin will play the remainder of it's home games at Camp Randall Stadium this season. The home opener is on Saturday against Akron at 2:30pm.
