SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Cancer is one of those things that affects us all. During Wake Up Wisconsin Monday, WKOW 27 News introduced you to someone who's really doing something about changing how it affects us.
Dr. Paul Harari is the Chairman of Human Oncology for UW Health. He is also the president-elect for the world's biggest radiation oncology group and just landed Wisconsin's first SPORE grant for head and neck cancer research. SPORE grants are "Specialized Programs of Research Excellence" that help move basic research findings more quickly from the laboratory to the patient. Dr. Harari says he's very proud to have brought Wisconsin's first SPORE grant to UW Health in the amount of $12 million that will help people with head and neck cancers.
In addition to the grant, the UW Department of Human Oncology is doing a bicycle ride September 18 to raise money for research into cancer. The ride in Sun Prairie fits all different fitness levels, so cyclists can choose which distance they want to go. There are five routes and they all go through beautiful Wisconsin countryside starting and ending in Sun Prairie. To learn more or sign up, click on this link.
