NY boy made honorary cop as he battles brain cancer

ITHACA, NY (WKOW) -- A 9-year-old boy in Ithaca had his dream come true: he became a cop.

The Ithaca Police Department held a ceremony for Colin Toland to make him an honorary officer. His family says he deserves it because he's the bravest kid they know.  Colin has gone through six brain surgeries.  Half of those have been within the last 20 months.

His father, Ian Hayward, told our CNN affiliate, WSTM, "Colin doesn't look at obstacles the way I've seen most people. He sees everyday as an opportunity to have fun. If he's having a tough time, he usually bounces back with a laugh or a joke."

That positive attitude is a reason why Chief John Barber says Colin is great for the force.  Chief Barber, "It's inspiring and he's touched the hearts of every single officer you see here."

Colin says, "I just like helping people."
