GRATIOT TOWNSHIP (WKOW) -- Authorities say a Salem man was arrested for an OWI-related homicide after a crash that killed a 22-year-old near Gratiot Township Saturday morning.

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office said 23-year-old John Drew Brewington crossed the center line while going west on State Trunk Highway 11 at about 2 a.m. Saturday, and hit a car being driven by 22-year-old Cameron Paddock of Monticello, Iowa. Paddock was taken to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, where he was pronounced dead. Officials wanted to send a helicopter, but couldn't because of the weather.

Officials said Brewington is tentatively charged with homicide through intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. The maximum sentence is a fine of $100,000, 25 years in prison, or both.

Both Brewington and his passenger were taken to the hospital and discharged, and that's when Brewington was arrested. He's currently in the Lafayette County Jail until he appears in court.
