YWCA Madison hosts Racial Justice Summit at Monona Terrace

MADISON (WKOW) – Dozens of local leaders are discussing ways to address and ultimately fix racial disparities in our community and around the nation this week.

The Madison branch of the YWCA is hosting its 15th annual Racial Justice Summit at the Monona Terrace. It got underway on Thursday morning.

The theme of this year's summit is “Changing the Narrative.” Officials say attendees are using discussions and speeches to change how they react to racial disparities in their personal and professional lives.

“I think there's a lot of people who know it's (racism) a problem, but maybe were a little surprised that this was still a problem we were wrestling with in Madison,” said Colleen Butler, Racial Justice Director for the YWCA in Madison. “And so I think people come (to the summit) because now that they're aware that this actually is living out the way that it is in our community, they want to know how they might be able to make a change, either personally in their own lives or in whatever context they're working or living in outside of their personal experience.”

Officials say a new focus of the summit this year is helping people get connected to help create change in their communities after the event, which wraps up Friday.
