Monona Grove streaks to state title game

Posted: Updated:
MONONA (WKOW) -

Heading into Week 5, the Monona Grove football was written off by many as they sat with a 2-2 record. Still, head coach Brandon Beckwith and his crew didn't panic.

"We knew that we'd go through some growing pains at the beginning of the year. The kids kind of just flipped the switch," says the second-year head coach.

The Silver Eagles slowly built momentum behind an offense that is averaging nearly 39 points per game over the past nine contests.

"It was just a complete team effort," says senior Andryi Nahirniak. "Throughout the season, we were just getting better as every game went on. We started off with a new offense. We just went from not being all that great as a team on offense to just clicking on all cylinders."

That offense led Monona Grove on a nine-game win streak that has them back in the state championship game for the first time since winning it all in 2013. Considering Monona Grove's storied history, it's hard to call them an underdog against Brookfield East. Still, the players will continue to carry a chip on their shoulder as they remember everyone who wrote them off this season.

"Playing with a chip on our shoulder every single day and just knowing that we're not known to be the best team. We're not known to be the biggest team. We just play like the best team," remarks junior Alec Ogden.

The Silver Eagles will try to lay claim to the best team in Division Two when they face Brookfield East at 1 p.m. on Friday at Camp Randall Stadium.
