Profit and Non-Profit Turkey Trots gobble up local dollars

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- When it comes to talking turkey trots, not all are created equal.

"We are a for-profit company," Madison's Turkey Trot Event Director Colin Pekovitch said.  "But we partner with the charities to give as much back as we can," he added.

The Madison Turkey Trot is not a locally based company, but it does donate dollars to one Dane County organization.

"There's about $7000 going to cerebral palsy,"Pekovitch said.

But at the Berbie Derbie, all proceeds stay local and go towards a technology education fund.

"Our mission is bigger than one other race," race spokeswoman Suzy Shane said.   But she says they have stepped up their game worried about the new for-profit trot in town.

"It was a little bit disappointing for us, I mean we are a non profit, we gave back $88,000 last year."

This year the Burbee Derby on set to give back 90,000 with more than 6,000 participants.  The Madison Turkey Trot says more than 3,000 came out to their event.
