No. 3 Badgers sweep Howard in NCAA Tournament opener

MADISON, Wis. – The third-seeded Wisconsin volleyball team opened NCAA tournament play with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-10 win over Howard in the UW Field House on Thursday night. The Badgers advance to the second round of the tournament where they will face Washington State on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Field House. The match airs live on the Big Ten Network.

Wisconsin improves to 26-4 on the season.

Freshman Molly Haggerty led all players with 16 kills while Lauryn Gillis and Haleigh Nelson both added 11 kills.

The Badgers hit .402 (51 kills – 12 errors – 97 attempts), their fourth highest hitting percentage of the season.

UW outdug Howard 49-32 behind 14 digs from junior Kelli Bates.

Bates also had two service aces as UW finished with a 3-0 advantage from the service line.

Wisconsin also outblocked the Bison 8-6 as Haleigh Nelson had seven stuffs.
