Protesters gather in Madison to support North Dakota pipeline protests

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Supporters of the pipeline protest in North Dakota took action to show their solidarity.

350 Madison, a group of climate activists, organized a protest outside the Army Corps of Engineers office on Madison's west side.

The Corps -- not this specific office -- granted the permit for the project.

Demonstrators say they're concerned the oil pipeline will lead to pollution.

"Sooner or later it will leak and that will be very serious consequences to drinking water and to air quality and to people's health. That is a risk we think we should not be taking," says Janette Rosenbaum.

The demonstration included a march to branches of two banks financing the pipeline project.

The company behind the pipeline says the route they've chosen is the least impactful and they have no plans to stop or re-route it.
