MADISON (WKOW) -- It's the time of year Madison-area snow-mobile riders have been waiting for.
County officials said in a news release Friday night that all Dane County snowmobile trails are open as of 7:00 p.m. For local trails to be open there, must be at least six inches of snow on the ground and steady, below freezing temperatures.
A State Snowmobile Trail Pass is required to ride on the snowmobile trail system.
Within Dane County, there are over 500 miles of snowmobile trails including Badger, Glacial Drumlin and the Military Ridge State Trails.
Sargent, Dane County Sheriff’s Department Sargent Tom Sankey says, “The majority of snowmobile trails are located on private land and users must stay on the designated marked trails.” He says those who venture off the trails will be considered trespassers and riders may be issued citations.
