Badgers' backup quarterback spot up for grabs

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -

Badgers head coach Paul Chryst wasted no time. As spring practices began, Chryst announced that Alex Hornibrook was his starting quarterback. That does not mean there won't be a quarterback competition in camp, however. Kare Lyles and Jack Coan are battling to see who will be Hornibrook's primary backup.

The Badgers currently only have three quarterbacks on the roster. Hornibrook is the only one with any game experience. Lyles redshirted as a freshman last season. Meanwhile, Coan just arrived on campus at the semester.

"The process has been great so far. I'm enjoying it," says Coan. "I'm just trying to come out here and just absorb all the information, just get better each day. This whole experience has been a blessing so far, and I'm just excited to be a part of it."

Coan just graduated from Sayville High School in New York.  The 6'3", 199-pound freshman was the New York Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. So, he comes to Madison with lofty expectations. For the time being, however, he's keeping his goals simple.

"My main goal is to get better each and every day. I don't want to take any steps back. Just get one percent better each day, and I hope to keep doing that."
