Brewers set opening day roster for 2017

Posted: Updated:

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- The Brewers are looking to start their 2017 season trying to wrest more control in the National League Central, which has been led by the defending World Series champion Cubs along with the Cardinals and Pirates in recent seasons.

In releasing their Opening Day roster today, ESPN reports the players will be led, as always, by left fielder Ryan Braun. However, the list also includes players who are seen as dynamic, young players like infielder Jonathan Villar  and center fielder Keon Broxton.

Eric Thames is listed to be the new first baseman - returning to MLB action after a stint with the Korea Baseball Organization. Previously, he'd also played outfield for the Toronto Blue Jays and also spend some time with the Seattle Mariners.

The team's news page says a total of nine players are poised for their first Major League Opening Day,

They include the Brewers' first two starting pitchers (Junior Guerra and Zach Davies), both of the team's catchers (Jett Bandy and Manny Pina), starting shortstop Orlando Arcia, plus three relievers (Jacob BarnesCorey Knebel and Jhan Mariñez) positioned to pitch high-leverage innings. Backup first baseman Jesus Aguilar is also set for his first Opening Day.

The Brewers' opening day matchup is Monday against the Colorado Rockies at 1:10 p.m. in Milwaukee.
