MADISON (WKOW) -- What do you get when you combine creative minds, canned goods and a food drive? Canstruction.

Canstruction is the yearly competition run by Middleton Outreach Ministry. This was the seventh year of the event. Participants built structures out of canned goods at West Towne Mall. This year's theme was "Can Film Festival," a play on the yearly film festival in Cannes, France.

Al Ripp, the executive director at Middleton Outreach Ministry, says all of the food used in Canstruction goes to the ministry's food pantry. He says it helps to serve families in Dane County who may be living in poverty.

"It's the people that are supporting the food pantries through events like Canstruction and their various food drives, that are making all the difference to help us meet that need," Ripp tells 27 News.

There are also awards at Canstruction. For instance, one display dubbed "The TiCanic," a replica of the famous ship, won the Structural Ingenuity Award.
