UniverCity Year celebrates first year at UW-Madison

MADISON (WKOW) -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison is celebrating a milestone with one of its new programs.

This is the end of the first year of UniverCity Year. The program paired UW students studying city planning with the city of Monona to work on projects within the community.

The director of the program, Jason Vargo, says UniverCity gave students experience on real-world, collaborative initiatives. And he's learned too. "I thought it was about what you did. And I think through this partnership, what I've realized is it's about who you're working with and how you work together. And it is really based on the relationships that you form," Vargo tells 27 News.

Next Fall, the program is partnering with Dane County to address issues like affordable housing and pollution in the Yahara waterways.
