Badgers Hughes named captain for 2017-18 season

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. – Cameron Hughes is done with finals and is headed home to Edmonton, Alberta, to spend some time with his family and relax for a bit after a long school year and hockey season.

He may have a bit more swagger when he returns home as he has been named team captain for the Wisconsin men’s hockey team for the 2017-18 season.

“It is really exciting. It is (an honor) coming from the coaches and the players,” Hughes said. “It is a role I was in a little bit this year and it will expand for next year.”

Hughes picked up his game last year, along with the rest of his teammates, and ended up third on the squad in scoring with 32 points in 36 games. He posted a team-best 25 assists and chipped in seven goals during a season that he spent as one of the Badgers’ alternate captains. He also scored the overtime game-winning goal against Ohio State at Madison Square Garden in January for one of the team’s season highlights.

Hughes, whose No. 19 jersey reflects, among other things, his affection for Chicago Blackhawks Jonathan Toews, will wear a ‘C’ on his jersey his senior season. Like Toews, who is known for his winning and his two-way play, and who leads by example, Hughes sees a similar role for himself going forward.

“(The coaches) said just keep doing the same things you are doing,” Hughes said. “I don’t have the best ra-ra speeches, but I lead by example.

“Learning from Luke (Kunin) was awesome. The way he conducted himself on the ice and off. I look to him a lot. Captains in the past like Eddie Wittchow and Kevin Schulze, they both led in their own ways.

Hughes expects to return to Madison next month and get down to business preparing for the 2017-18 campaign, but he and his teammates are already looking forward to next year.

“We are looking forward to that first game to get back inside the Kohl Center,” Hughes said. “The schedule got released (last week) and we were all showing it to each other on our phones and getting really excited for the games.

“We are really eager and excited to get back in front of the fans and get another chance to do something special.”
