Lawmakers propose bill to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Students from the Indian Community School joined lawmakers to make their voices hear at the State Capitol.

The school joined State Rep. David Bowen (D-Milwaukee) Tuesday to show support for a bill that would replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day in Wisconsin.

"This legislation would give the state a real opportunity to celebrate and learn more about the Native American people who call Wisconsin home, and are such an important part of our state heritage," said Bowen.

If the bill passes, the second Monday of October would be declared Indigenous Peoples Day.

Right now, the legislation is circulating for legislators to cosponsor.
