Police remind holiday shoppers to lock car doors after increase in thefts

MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- Police across Dane County are reminding people to be extra careful with their gifts this season.

Middleton Police Department Captain Steve Britt says agencies across Dane County have already seen an increase in theft from cars.

Cpt. Britt tells 27 News on average they received at least one reported theft per day. So far this year, as of November 30th, Middleton police have received more than 400 reports.

Cpt. Britt says it doesn't matter where you're parked if your presents are left in the car where thieves can easily see them and your doors are unlocked then they're going to get stolen.

"They just throw stuff in the car, and they'll go onto their next destination and you leave things, items of value in plain view whether it's parked in a private driveway or commercial parking lot, there are individuals looking for that opportunity, they will find that car and take things from it," said Cpt. Britt.

In other cities, Madison police report, as of November 30th, they've reported more than 1300 theft from cars and in Janesville, they've received about 370 reports so far this year.

Cpt. Britt urges drivers to always lock their car doors no matter where it's parked. He says the chance of something getting stolen from a locked car is dramatically less than an unlocked car.

If presents are left in the car, he recommends putting a blanket over them or putting them in the trunk out of plain sight.
